Real Riders Feature - George Evans
George 'King of Wales' Evans
Current Welsh National Time Trial Champion
George, you’ve had a great year so far, what stands out for you as your best result?
I’d say the stand out results for me so far are: The first round of the Knight Composite Classic Series at Buxton where I took the overall win by nearly 2 minutes and was very close to a long standing course record.
Tour of Cambridge Chrono: 2nd in age group and 3rd overall.
North Wales Road Race 1 (Brenig) national B: 6th in a quality field on one of the hardest courses around.
Education wise what are you doing this year? We’ve heard a rumour you’re off to uni next year, what is the plan?
Yeah so I’ve just finished access to higher education Science in college to compliment the couple of A levels I got a couple of years ago in Biology and PE. Pleased to say I got an unconditional offer at Nottingham Trent university with a top tier sports scholarship. At the minute I’m just focusing on my cycling for the rest of the season and seeing what happens team wise to make a final decision about plans next year.
Welsh Champs, your skinsuit looks awesome this year with the stripes on, how are things in place for retaining it?
It is quality being able to race in the custom welsh champs skinsuit from Endura. So the Welsh championships are around the end of August, so still a bit of time but I think I’m in a good position to defend the title in the TT and fight for a result in the road race.
All joking apart how do you find the balance between college and training?
Balancing college with cycling was fine as it was only 3 days per week so on those 3 days I would just do shorter more intense sessions and then fit the volume in on the other 4 days.
British champs are just a few days away now, how are the ambitions and confidence for the race?
I’ve been having a great build up in training for the British championship starting with the main goal of the U23 TT champs on the 28th. Just starting to taper for it now and I’m feeling good putting out some good numbers in training and we know my UCI position and setup is quick so fingers crossed it all comes together on race day. Obviously as it’s the British championship there’s some quality riders on the start sheet but I’ll just see what I can do on the big stage!
